In a recent post, I talked about the 5 things I do to stay sane while being on lockdown. One of them was indoor gardening and I promised to dive further into this… well here it is!
About a year ago, I bought a vertical aeroponic growing system, also known as a Tower Garden. This garden allows me to grow my own fruits, vegetables, and herbs inside my home.
For a quick, five minute video on this particular garden, please see here:
Now the back story, and a little more in how I got involved in the first place. Well… I blame my cousin.
She was talking about Juice Plus, this new company that she signed up for. Yes, it’s similar to a MLM company, but there are very big differences.
For one, I don’t think it’s a get rich quick scheme. For two, there’s no pressure to team build. I’m getting ahead of myself here.
Anyway, my cousin is part of Juice Plus, which is a company that sells 4 types of pills, 2 types of protein shakes, 2 types of protein bars, and the tower garden.
There are a few other items on the list, but as you can see, it’s very little selection.
They focus on health. All the pills, bars, and shakes, are all made by juicing fruits and vegetables. That’s it.
Health and Wellness for the Family
Obviously there’s a lot more science behind it, but the bottom line is, you get around 30+ servings of fruits just by taking your daily intake of pills. Crazy right?
So I loved the sound of this. I wanted the pills. Side note, there are also gummies, which is the kid-version of the pills.
I loved the fact that I could take these pills, and my kids could take their gummies, and then we’d be getting more than our fill of fruits and vegetables.
My husband, he wasn’t so keen on the pill idea, because yes, it’s pretty pricey as you have to buy four months supply at a time.
He was very interested in my cousin’s garden though. He wanted to grow his own vegetables.
So a year ago, I ask my cousin if we can buy all the pills (for me), all the gummies (for my kids), and a tower garden (for my husband).
Oh, and I also want all the shakes, because protein shakes are delicious and until that point, I’d yet to find a protein powder that I really liked.
She suggested that I sign up to be a ‘consultant’. To be honest, I use that term lightly because I’m not even sure that’s what I am.
Basically by signing up, I get a small discount on the products I buy, and if anyone else buys products from me, then I would get a kick back as well.
There are no monthly minimums or quotas. There is no obligation to sell. And the discount I got on the tower garden was more than the fee I had to pay to sign up to begin with.
Fast forward a few months…. The garden that the husband wanted, he had no interest in building, growing, or maintaining.
When we were getting the house ready to sell, this was the first thing we packed up.
When looking for a new home, I kept thinking “where will the tower garden go” – as one of my key questions.
Our new home (which still feels new even though we’ve lived here for almost five months) had the perfect layout for all the things that we wanted, including a really big office for me that I could put all my crafts in, and have a dedicated gardening spot.
This time it was important for me (and my mental health) to put together the tower garden myself.
Yes, I did call my cousin a couple times regarding maintenance over the last year – so big shout out to her for always being available to answer my questions!
By putting the garden together by myself, it became mine. Hubs will maintain the PH levels, because that seems to be his thing (similar to how he manages the hot tub levels). But I did the rest myself.
Maintaining Sanity Through Activity
Built the thing, filled up a 40 gallon basin with water, grew seeds, planted seeds, and harvest.
All this year. 2020. Yep.
And before then, I didn’t even own so much as a plant… except the money tree, but there’s a longer more depressing story that I will save for another day.
The tower garden is very easy, very affordable, and very useful. We don’t have to buy anymore leafy greens or many herbs.
I’m still working on my fruiting vegetables, but everything else has sprouted like a champ.
I have so much pride and satisfaction in growing my own garden – that now we’re looking at growing outdoors as well.
Once spring hits, which happens much later in the cold north where we live, we will be planting an outdoor garden to grow all our root vegetables.
Mostly I’m excited about having a carrot farm to feed the deer.
When I talk about gardening for my sanity, even my goals for the future bring about a certain peace.
So I highly recommend this. While I know money is tight for many of us, this is something worth looking into.
This is one of those things that is good for the mental health and the physical health. It’s all good stuff!
